The annual Cheriton 6-a-side cricket trophy, sponsored by the Flower Pots Inn, was
contested on Monday 30th August. The
prestigious tournament – now in its 17th year –
was played from 9am to dusk. Eight teams competed in two group competitions, then semi-finals and
the final. Joining the hosts Cheriton are: Bishops
Waltham, Fair Oak Rangers, Hambledon, Ropley, Tichborne Park,
Ventnor and making their 6s debut this
year – St Cross.
Play commenced
at 09:00 with two round robin leagues of four teams each. There was almost
continuous play with each match interlaced with
the following game. Each game was five overs per
innings with each fielder bowling except the
wicket keeper. A few
batsmen retired at 25 and some
returned to bat again. There are many variations
on the standard game e.g. 3 runs for a wide and
no extra ball except in the final over of an innings. More details in the rules

The players wore coloured strip and even the balls this year were coloured pink!
There were
12 games in the league stage followed by knock-out semi-finals and the grand final at 6.30 pm. All matches were of 5 overs a side – one bowled by each of the fielders. This year over
1650
runs were scored!
