The annual Cheriton 6-a-side cricket trophy,
sponsored by the Flower Pots Inn, will again be
contested on Monday 31st August. The
prestigious tournament – now in its 16th year –
is played from 9am to dusk. Eight teams compete
in two group competitions, then semi-finals and
the final. Joining the hosts Cheriton are Ventnor,
Tichborne Park, Hampshire Hogs (last years
winners), Ropley and making their 6s debut this
year – Bishops Waltham, Brigands and Hambledon.
Play commences at 09:00 with two round robin
leagues of four teams each. There is almost
continuous play with each match interlaced with
the following game. Each game is five overs per
innings with each fielder bowling except the
wicket keeper. Batsmen retire at 25 but often
return to bat again. There are many variations
on the standard game e.g. 3 runs for a wide and
no extra ball except in the final over of an innings.
